Historical Facts:

  • Visited by Christopher Columbus in 1493
  • In 1902, Denmark rejected Denmark offer to buy St. John, St. Thomas, & St. Croix for Five- Million Dollars ($5,000,000)
  • 1 of 4 islands purchased by the United States from Denmark in 1917 for Twenty-Five million USD ($25,000,000)
  • Up until 1492, the Taino Indians made a peaceful living on St. John USVI
  • On March 1718, possession of St. John was taken in the name of the King of Denmark & the Danish West India Company.
  • In 1834, slaves in St. John saw an opportunity to escape to Tortola being that they became emancipated.
  • Labor Act was established and freed the slaves on the plantations 
  • Direct flights began  to the U.S. Mainland in 1966
  • Dr. Donna Christian Green  was the first elected Virgin Islands delegate to U.S. Congress in 1997
